Attending the Creative at Heart Conference was a game changer for me. To be quite honest I was feeling nervous and overwhelmed with my thoughts of "Michelle, what are you doing?" "This is only for real creatives that have their stuff together."And I most certainly do not. I mean looking through the list of speakers was nerve-wracking enough. These people have been groundbreaking in their fields and have been inspiring others for so many years, what was I doing attending this thing? I'm just me, a somewhat new creative who likes making pretty things with flowers. Well...when I say game changer, I mean it. To be in a room filled with 80 girls (and 3 guys!) who are just like you or have been just where you are is unlike any feeling I've ever had. Two full days jam packed with information on blogging, small business ownership, and creating the life you want was incredible, but you know what was better? The sense and overall feeling of community. "Compassion over Competition." I've always thought that because the wedding industry is so saturated there had to be competition. I had to show I was better than them. Nope, wrong, SO wrong. We're in this business to be a part of other people's lives, why wouldn't we be just as open with others in this industry? We Can. To the creative that walked right over and wanted to get to know me, thank you. And thank you to the creative who let me get to know her. Thank you to the creatives who joined me for lunch and dinner those 2 days. It seems so silly to be scared of putting yourself out there, but we are. We're human. I loved what Kat of Dear Sweetheart Events said during her talk and I'll never forget it. She said that it seems as though you're being a fake when introducing yourself as a wedding planner, photographer, or floral designer. It doesn't seem like a "real job", but OWN IT. That's who you are, don't be ashamed. Put it out there. We're in this together and we'll have so much more success in our own businesses if we are kind and welcoming.

A huge thank you to Kat and Taylor of Letters of Grace Calligraphy for making your dream of this conference a reality. The Sunday night pajama party with cupcakes and Taylor Swift blasting was amazing and the gift bags were fun and the decor was gorgeous, but seriously, thank you. You brought planners, photographers, graphic designers, calligraphers and other creatives together to support one another and lift each other up. And we did and we WILL continue to. I left Creative @ Heart a totally different person and I'm so ready to take my business to another level, but more importantly take others with me and support, encourage, and cheer them on. There's nothing better than that.

Love,

Michelle xoxo

Hello! Welcome! I'm Michelle (that's me up there!) and I am the owner and creative director of One Sweet Day in May. Whether you are newly engaged, a fellow creative, or just browsing the internet for pretty things, I invite you to make yourself at home and stay awhile.

I am in the business of event floral design and boy is it fun! There's something about bringing a bride's vision to life that really fires me up. But, I'm getting ahead of myself...How did I get into this? Well a little more than 2 years ago, my life became saturated with weddings. I got engaged and two other family members did as well. Yeah, a little crazy. So just like that I was flipping through magazines, creating dozens of pin boards, eating, drinking, and sleeping weddings. And you know what I was drawn to the most? The flowers. They were so pretty in every picture, they popped out at me like nothing ever before. I was instantly hooked. So my wonderful and thoughtful now husband gets me flowers every week. I am very lucky, I know and he reminds me all the time haha. Well, I started playing with them and making bouquets. (I may or may not have pretended to walk down the "aisle" with a few haha) and people started liking them, like really liking them. Shortly after that I designed a few centerpieces for a small event and then booked a full-service floral design contract for a wedding. An actual wedding. With a bride and a groom. WHAT. These people trusted me to do something so huge for the biggest day of their lives? OK. So I did it and it was incredible. To actually visually see something that I created be implemented into someones wedding day blew me away. So I have to tell you where the name for my little business came from, well this is the part that makes me giddy. Chris (my husband) and I originally had a wedding date of May 10th, 2014 and we named our wedding website onesweetdayinmay.com. It was what my whole wedding day was going to revolve around. Then in February we got a phone call from Chris' younger brother Jonathan. He is in the Air Force and despite his efforts to be able to make it, he was being deployed in May. My heart instantly broke and I started crying my eyes out which surprised Chris. My heart broke of course because we were so close to our day, but really because I knew down deep it wouldn't be the same. See, Chris has this big wonderful family. He has 2 brothers and 1 sister,  the most supportive of parents, and all his aunts and uncles here locally. Well, I don't. My family is not close and I'm not really in touch with my extended family. They are great, they just live in England. Not exactly convenient. Plus, my sister-in-law means the world to me and she amazes me being able to handle military life the way she does daily with Jonathan away a lot of the time. She is such an inspiration to me and to have her at our wedding without Jonathan just didn't feel right. Chris' family has become mine and the thought of his brother not being there just crushed me. So we moved our wedding with the help of our amazing vendors. September 20th was our new date and you know what? Worth it and would do it again in a heartbeat. I of course had to change our wedding website. One Sweet Day in May just wasn't going to work, but I always held on to that little saying. I spoke to a branding company in the beginning stages of my company and I'll never forget the advice I was given...choose a name you connect with personally. I was asked why I started doing this and it of course went back to Chris and my own wedding. I could have chosen Michelle Schmidt Designs or something similar, but let's be honest, Michelle Schmidt doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. So One Sweet Day in May was born and you know what, it feels like me. It's mine and because it feels like me, it makes this business feel more meaningful. I feel like I put a little of me in every bouquet, every boutonniere, and every centerpiece. They are not just flowers, they are a labor of love from a little place inside me that reminds me of my own wedding. So welcome to the One Sweet Day in May blog. Here is where I will keep you updated on my life both personally and professionally. Let you in behind the scenes, and share my dreams and fears with you. I'm an open book so let me know if you have any questions or just want to chat. I just got back from the Creative @ Heart conference, so stay tuned for tomorrow's post where I'll recap my incredible weekend spent with the most inspiring of creative girls just like me.

Love,

Michelle xoxo
