One Sweet Day in May is growing!

Earlier this Summer I realized things were growing with One Sweet Day in May much faster than I ever anticipated. Bride bookings were rolling in for this Fall and 2016 weddings as well as 2017 inquiries (what!) A wonderful feeling, yet at the same time terrifying. It's only me here. One girl trying to rule the floral world...well, that might be a bit of a stretch, but sometimes that's what it feels like. As much as I love OSDIM, my life outside of flowers and weddings is very important to me. I love my family so much and maybe it comes with the territory of owning your own business, but sometimes they take a back seat to all the emails, meetings, and weddings. Not always, but it's definitley been something that has happened more than I'd like to admit this year. It's been hard and as I was looking forward to the busiest season yet, what could I do to make things easier for myself and allow me my more time with Chris and friends?  Going into the busy season, I knew I couldn't do it all (as much as I want to be able to)

My word of 2015 is build. It is meant for all aspects of my life. I wanted to build One Sweet Day in May into the little business that could, wanted to build my marriage in it's first year, and wanted to build our newish house into a home. All things that I can happily say, I've done. The house does still have a long list of projects, but I've come to accept that it always will. So back to earlier this Summer....

I had heard a lot about outsourcing from other business owners, but honestly thought I couldn't afford it. Hello! I'm in my first REAL year and who in their first year needs an assistant? The truth was though, I needed help. I knew One Sweet Day in May couldn't keep growing that way it was without a little help.  Brides are my #1 priority and because of that many other things weren't being kept up to date. So in July after some price restructuring and drawing up a business plan, I took the leap and announced I was looking for a part time assistant. Enter, Caroline!

Now, first things first, I have to credit Anna of The Richmond Wedding Collective for this one. Anna sent Caroline my way for an interview and I'm so grateful! Thank you Anna! Secondly, (and this has nothing to do with me hiring her) I just love the name Caroline. Chris and I have always had the name Stella in mind if we have a girl someday, but I secretly believe we would actually name a daughter Caroline. It's my favorite.

Caroline has officially been with me for 2 weeks and so far has made my life so much easier. Between keeping the website, blog, and Pinterest updated, and me picking her creative mind, she's made my busiest month to date so much easier. Caroline will be assisting on event days with setups and bouquet deliveries as well as attending venue walk throughs and bridal appointments. Yay! She wants to gain as much experience as possible and it's a great feeling knowing that you're not just using someone to help you, but you're also teaching and guiding someone to build their own dreams. It's probably my favorite thing about this new step in my business.

A little bit about Caroline, she is a Junior at The University of Richmond and is a super talented dancer with the UofR dance company. Hearing about her auditions and pieces she has parts in this year is so fun! Caroline has dreams of becoming a wedding planner one day and I just know she will make a wonderful one! The girl is going places!

A huge thank you to my girl Natalie Jayne Photography for taking the time to snap some pretties!

Happiness overload friends! You'll be seeing way more of this pretty girl and a way more relaxed Michelle! Hooray! And when you're seeing the website and other OSDIM platforms looking all fancy and up to date, that'll be Caroline doing her thing behind the scenes.

Have a good one friends!

Love,

One Sweet Bride- Michelle

Welcome back! I'm so happy to introduce to you One Sweet Bride Michelle! Michelle and her now husband got married this past Saturday at the Berkeley Plantation just outside of Richmond. With all the busyness preparing for Michelle's big day, I didn't get a chance to write her One Sweet Bride post! Better late than never I suppose! Michelle is a simple girl who loves vintage touches and wanted a overall rustic look. Think tons of bud vases with pops of peaches and corals with classic details tied in through her bouquets. Gorgeous.

Michelle and I have a kind of different story with how we met. Usually a bride will be referred to me via another wedding vendor or will find throughs google searches. Well Michelle and I met because of my pup Levi. I went into PetSmart to pick up a few last minute items before Levi's big arrival day an Michelle was working there as an associate. She helped me create Levi's name tag because the machine was acting up. I noticed that she had an engagement ring her hand and I asked her when the big day was. She said next September. As you know, I was a September bride (1 year this week!) and have a special place for other late Summer brides. I told Michelle that I was a wedding floral designer and the rest is history. So fun to meet brides that way!

It's been so fun planning her florals with Michelle for the past 10 months and I will miss our Starbucks dates. Here is a look into the inspiration for her wedding flowers and as always, I asked Michelle to answer a few questions. Congratulations, Michelle!

This wedding was right up my alley with tons of corals, peaches, and navy. Classic, but with rustic touches made the day simply lovely.

What is your Fiances name?

 John Ochtyun

What's the story? How did you two meet?

Well it's actually kind of funny. John and I both worked at Petsmart at the time. He worked at a different store than me and I was only working part time and going to school full time. He was doing district manager duties at my store and I was on a ladder cleaning fish tanks. He started to walk out the door and decided to come back in because "he was too hard on one of my managers," and wanted to apologize to him. That's what he said at least. He then saw me and approached me and introduced himself. We went on a few dates and it was history from there.

Tell us all the proposal details?

The proposal was perfect. Well other than one slight detail. We went to Virginia Beach for a few nights.  The first day we were there headed out to the beach all day. We were going to go back to the hotel room, take showers, and head to a fancy restaurant. Low and behold we got back to the hotel and they said they hot water heater had damage and it was being replaced at that time and could take anywhere from 2-4 hours. I was absolutely not taking a cold shower, so needless to say we did not go to a fancy restaurant but instead a local one. After dinner, we took a sunset stroll on the beach. John knows I prefer not to be in the spotlight so we walked for a while on the beach until there weren't many big crowds around the residential houses. He got down on one knee and I truly thought he was kidding. I was a happy girl!

Where is your big day happening?

    Berkeley Plantation, in Charles City

What is the inspiration for your wedding?

I've always loved anything rustic and antique, and chose the color scheme of navy, coral, and peach!

What has been most important to you while planning?

The most important thing has been to include my family, and Johns family in decision making for the wedding. I really wanted them to feel and know their opinion matters to me.

What about the wedding are you most excited about?

Of course the most exciting part is marrying John and becoming his wife. But I absolutely love my dress and can't wait to put it on and wear it all day. I'll never want to take it off!

What are you most looking forward to about getting married?

Once I get married, I look forward to building more memories with John and my family, joined with his. We hope to have kids in the future as well!

Any advice for fellow brides in the planning process?

Absolutely. Leave it to the professionals! Just remember, they have done plenty of weddings, more than you I am sure. They know what they are doing and you need to put your trust in them. It is more expensive but doing everything yourself is very stressful, especially the couple of days leading up to the wedding. If you are a perfectionist it is hard to sit back and let others take care of everything, but just know it is worth it!

Best Wishes Michelle and John! Enjoy Mexico!

Later on the blog this week, I'm talking styled shoots and how to do Fall wedding flowers right!

One Sweet Fridays

I'm currently writing this surrounded by the most beautiful of white and cream blooms in my kitchen. The sun is pouring in and I'm gearing up for 2 big and wonderful weddings this weekend! It's just going to be a short one as this girl has got some work to do, but I wanted to say that I hope you have the most wonderful of holiday weekends with loved ones. After I've sent both my brides smiling into happily ever after with their bouquets, this girl is taking Monday OFF. I'm talking sleeping in, brunch, day date with Chris and the pups, and I'm thinking some wine and Netflix. It's going to be good y'all!

And with that, I'm off to go do my thing and gets these blooms done! See you back here on Monday!
